OST Tiwahe Commission

Guided by the People

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Tiwahe Commission was established by Tribal law as a governing Tribal entity vested with authority to plan, implement, and evaluate the Tribe’s Tiwahe Initiative in full compliance with Tribal and applicable federal laws and regulations. Composed of five commissioners, the Commission provides broad oversight and strategic leadership for Tiwahe-related services under Social Services and the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), working in coordination with the Tiwahe Executive Director and staff who manage day-to-day operations. Charged with safeguarding program integrity and outcomes, the Commission oversees operational performance, monitors federal appropriations for the Tiwahe Demonstration Project, ensures outcome-based reporting, and is empowered to take all necessary measures in response to declared States of Emergency impacting the Tribe’s ICWA and Child Protective Services programs-always with the goal of strengthening families and protecting Oglala Lakota children.
